What to Expect:
Bow in
Warm up and dynamic stretching
Kihon - basic techniques (punches, kicks, knees, elbows) practiced without an opponent
Kata - putting the solo techniques together into longer choreographed sequences
Kumite - practicing the techniques against a resisting opponent
Conditioning - body conditioning, strength training, longer static stretching
Bow out
We don’t do everything every day, but this is a good idea of the range of activities.
Sparring
Free sparring, called jiyu kumite, is an important part of our training but if this is your first martial arts experience you won’t be sparring from day 1. We get beginners prepared to spar safely by training pre-arranged fighting drills with increasing intensity to develop the ability to read techniques and control their timing, distance, and power. We spar with mouthguards and athletic cups but no gloves or shin pads, so some amount of body conditioning is necessary. If you have previous experience, this will be a conversation with Ian.
What to Wear
We wear gi, white uniforms with a colored belt to indicate your level of experience. For your first month, feel free to wear comfortable athletic clothing instead. In the summer we wear gi pants and T shirts.
